University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Uses Combination of Technology and Empathy to Improve the Patient Experience
CHICAGO and IOWA CITY, IOWA, February 7, 2019 – Oneview Healthcare, PLC (“Oneview”) (ASX:ONE), a global leader in patient experience and workflow technology, today announced the publication of a case study with University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. The case study, titled Hawkeye Heaven: How University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital Used Technology and Empathy to Create an Improved Patient Experience, found here, details patient experience initiatives at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital since its opening in February 2017.
According to the case study, published by The Beryl Institute, UI Hospitals & Clinics saw significant improvements in HCAHPS scores after creating a personalized and immersive digital hospital experience for patient and families in their rooms. Specifically, the hospital saw improvements related to the following questions:
- Likelihood to recommend to others
- Received instructions for child home care
- Provided condition/treatment info to family
- Felt ready for discharge
“It is important to combine both high tech and high touch to improve patient and family experience,” said Maia Hightower, MD, former CMIO, UI Hospitals & Clinics. “High tech in-room patient engagement platforms support improvements in experience, education, and discharge preparedness. And, authentic demonstrations of empathy, especially when they are unique to the individual or community, can honor families and improve the experience of being hospitalized.”
The University of Iowa “Wave for the Kids” and “Drew’s Lamp” room controls are other tangible demonstrations of empathy’s impact on patient experience.
“We’re pleased to be a part of making the patient experience better and are proud to partner with University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics,” said Mark McCloskey, President and Founder of Oneview Healthcare. “Improving the patient experience requires much more than simply implementing technology. UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s success is the result of a true commitment to change management, and a willingness to listen to the needs of their patients.”
Note: Dr. Hightower is now the CMIO of University of Utah Health.
